Wood is one of the most easy to find  and work with materials for making beads. Therefore, you will notice that wherever wood is present, you will also get wooden beads. Many jewellery designers and crafters make use of the most easily available species of wood in making beads. There are a variety of forms, types, and sizes of wood available for wooden beads.

Unfortunately, as these beads are so commonly used that they are mostly taken for granted. There are very few articles that will tell you about wooden beads. Also, the study of wood material for making beads is not considered a subject for those bead researchers who are serious. This article helps you to understand the types of wood and wooden beads and its uses in jewellery making.

Types of Wood Used in Making Beads

There are many different types of trees that provide material for making wood beads. Some of them are sandalwood, olive, ebony, bamboo, bayong, palm, apple, ironwood, rose, pear, and many more. All of these kinds of wood are being used for creating beads either due to their beautiful grain or aromatic scent.

Olive trees have a natural red grain present in them that is wavy. This wood has a darkened Heartwood (centre) that gets hardened with age and produces an elegant pattern. The heart wood that comes from olive trees is pruned each and every year after the harvest after that the pruned wood is then used for creating decorative carvings and making wooden beads.

Sandalwood Beads

These types of beads are light in colour as well as weight. Also, they have a unique soothing aroma. It is one of the most commonly used types of wooden beads worn by Hindus as it is believed to bring clear perception to its wearer.

Rosewood Beads

Rosewood is perfect for creating beads. It is heavy, dark, and dense. Its grain comes in subtle lines in black and dark brown colour. They are used to make Rosewood beads that are known to reinforce the aura and keep away all negative energies.

These beads are used for many types of reasons, including beauty and aroma. This wood is prized because it is considered as most sacred similar to the wood of the bodhi tree, where Buddha found his enlightenment.

These are most exotic wooden beads that most commonly originate in Southern Asia or the Middle East. But, Europe is also one among the source of wood beads. The Czech Republic also produces these  inexpensive pine and basswood beads that are used for many purposes like creating jewellery, kid's toys, as well as macramé crafters.

Like all other kinds of wooden beads, Rosewood beads are used by many crafters and artists who collect exotic woods from all over the world.
