Fine Jewelry Occasions

There are several important milestone events in everyone's life that are excellent opportunities to give a piece of fine jewelry. Some of these occasions may seem cliche or silly, but because fine jewelry is so timeless and long lasting, it makes the perfect token to mark those special moments in your life. It wasn't until a friend of mine bought her now husband an antique railroad watch for their wedding day that I decided to put together this list of the most common times people give jewelry. A few days after my friend's wedding the groom came in to my shop stressed out over the fact that he had nothing to give his now wife on their wedding day when the maid of honor presented him with his watch. My friend later confessed that she knew he was unaware that brides and grooms often give small tokens on their wedding day. Maybe I should have told him? Even if you think this list was created by Hallmark or the fine jewelry industry to boost sales and the economy, it's worth noting that most people would be overjoyed to receive a precious heirloom quality jewel on any of the following occasions.

1. Anniversary
Sure, there's a traditional list of anniversary gifts for every year you've been married. You could opt to get your spouse a piece of wood on your 5th wedding anniversary, but this is also a great time to give a piece of jewelry in his or her taste that will last a lifetime.

2. Wedding Day
To some its customary for the bride and groom to exchange small gifts the day of their wedding. Usually they haven't seen each other leading up the wedding, and one of the bridesmaids and groomsmen exchanges the gifts. It doesn't have to be anything outrageous since an engagement ring was recently exchanged and wedding bands purchased, but a locket or small necklace make great options.

3. New Baby
These gifts have become known as the push present, and it's surprising how many men still don't know about them. If this is baby number 4, maybe a push present isn't necessary, but on baby number one, a piece of jewelry after giving birth is a great way to show how much she and the baby means to you. Giving the new mom a piece of jewelry in the baby's birthstone is a popular option, and it's something the mother can pass down to the baby when he/she gets older.

4. Birthday
I will never forget as a child I received a pearl ring for my birthday. I must have been 9 or 10 years old. I remember my parents telling me how special the ring was because it was gold and my birthstone, and I would have to take special care of it. I still have that ring and remember it more than most other gifts my parents have given me. If you have a daughter that loves jewelry and is responsible enough to care for it, this is a great occasion to give a piece of fine jewelry.

5. Valentine's Day
Jewelry is much better than chocolate and flowers if the budget allows.

6. Engagement
Not everyone uses a ring to propose, but most people do. Even if you can't afford a diamond, there are gorgeous less expensive silver options available. Or you can try DIY some easy jewelry with fancy beads and findings. He or she will surely love it!

7. Anytime
Fine jewelry is very sentimental. Even though it's mostly geared toward women, everyone has a specific taste for jewelry. Fine jewelry is one of the most durable and lasting gifts you can give.
