The Pleasures In Uncovering The Art Of Cabochons

Your average person does not commonly know cabochons. For those of you that have began their journey into the art of jewelry making, there is quite a bit of information that you need to know, if you are looking to achieve the creation you are looking for. Luckily, you do not have to look any further when it comes to understanding gem.


What is Cabochon?

Cabochon is often used softer or opaque gems. They are a unique and intricate cut for gemstones. These beauties are one of the most common and basic cuts, and very well known by most jewelers. Even though they have a simple cut, it can drastically transform it's look, bringing out the unique lines and shapes of the rock. They are used mostly like regular cabochons, and is used in ornamental jewelry. They range from varying sizes and shapes that is sure to suit your creative needs.

Unique Cuts of Cabochons 

Not all cuts are well suited for the all gemstones. Diamonds, among others, are stones that are translucent, and tend to look plain and dull when they are cut into the uniqueness of gem. Since there are no ways to reflect light, there is no sparkle behind the gem in this way. Contrary, other stones can look quite beautiful when they are in a cabochon cut.


In order to cut cabochons, a knowledgeable jeweler must first cut a rough piece from the rock, and use a saw to start trimming the stone into its shape. The shape of the unique cut is mounted on a stick that is called a "dop" stick, so it can be polished and curved. Once the stone has been polished to perfection, the jeweler can begin customizing the gem for satisfaction.

Shapes of Gems

Cabochons vary in many shapes. They are well known to be in the classic teardrops, rounds, and oval shapes. Some jewelers choose to cut their gems into irregular and unique shapes, which are specifically designed to feature certain features of each unique rock. These rocks can be quite small, which can be made into rings or earrings. The larger pieces usually are transformed into a brooch, or a necklace.
